ST JOHN’S — Liat is no longer willing to absorb the “spiralling” expenditure associated with security and has introduced a US$ 1.25 surcharge to “recoup some of the additional security costs”.
The new fee which is per one way trip, applies to all passengers, including children and infants.
A Liat-issued press release did not indicate when the surcharge would take effect but the carrier told passengers it appreciated their “understanding in the current circumstances.”
The Antigua-based company explained that “heightened” airline and airport security over the last 10 years has resulted in rising security demands such as extra baggage searches and increased precautions when aircraft are on the ground.
“Liat has been absorbing these costs in an effort to cushion the effects on its customers,” the carrier said.
According to Liat, the security surcharge brings it in line with more than 100 airlines that have introduced similar fees since 2001. (Antigua Observer)
