A United States based religious organisaton which distributes religious tracts has aroused the ire of a local female pastor because it does not recognise females as church leaders.
Pastor Marguerite Breedy-Haynes of Saving the Lost at Any Cost In Time Ministries told Barbados TODAY that for the past eight years she has been receiving literature from Bible Tracts, Inc., of Bloomington, Illinois for distribution to Barbadians.
She complained that last month when she told a lady at the organisation that she was now a pastor and that her church has two locations in Barbados, she received a letter this week informing her that they cannot send her anymore material because she is a woman.
The correspondence cited 1 Timothy 3 which says, “This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a Bishop, he desireth a good work. A Bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality and apt to teach”, to bear out their argument that a woman should never be the head of a church.
However, Haynes pointed out that she had a ministry called Saving the Lost at Any Cost, an in-house operation that distributed the tracts when they visited people.
“I wanted a ministry of prayer so I decided to get tracts from Bible Tracts,” she added.
Presenting arguments in favour of women heading churches, Haynes said: “You have to look at the context of the Scripture. The word of God says there is neither male nor female.”
Haynes cited Jeremiah 31-22 which says: “How long will you go about O you backsliding daughter? For the Lord has created a new on earth. A woman shall protect a man.”
Arguing that the approach taken by Bible Tracts was biased, Haynes said: “I think this is discriminating against women and I think it is time for women to be liberated. There are
many congregations in Barbados which keep down women. Women are not only child bearers. Jesus’ ministry included many women.”
She pointed out that she was now the pastor in charge of the Saving the Lost at any Time Ministries, which is registered by the Government and assists in feeding the poor.
Haynes further disclosed that her church had been bringing people from Russia to Israel for the past five years and supports the International Fellowship of Christian Jews.
Her church, she revealed, uses the facilities of the Main Guard at the Garrison and assists in the rehabilitation of prostitutes by finding homes and jobs for them. (NC)
