At a time when there are many “sick buildings” in Barbados, an entity known as UVR has come to give relief to those who suffer respiratory ailments in the workplaces and public places.
Regional manager of UV Resources, Lorrie Todd, offered this hope to Barbadians who suffer from ailments brought on by the poor upkeep of air-conditioning equipment in such places as government and private sector offices.
Addressing personnel from the public and private sectors who are responsible for the upkeep of such equipment during a one-day seminar at the Hilton Barbados, she said that Sick Building Syndrome was characterised by symptoms such as itchy and watery eyes, dizziness, headaches, nausea, sinus congestion, lethargy, an inability to concentrate, respiratory infections. Other symptoms associated with allergies and asthma may also result from Sick Building Syndrome.
“My company cleans air-conditioning systems thereby allowing them to work properly, efficiently and save energy in a building as a result of the spiraling cost of fossil fuel,” she told Barbados TODAY.
The regional manager told the gathering that her company installs ultra-violet lights in the evaporator of the air-conditioning unit to destroy mold and fungi which can affect the quality of air entering a building.
She stressed that indoor air quality can impact significantly on the health, comfort and productivity of occupants of offices therefore it is a major concern to employers, building managers and employees. It is therefore important to understand indoor air quality, how it is assessed and how to improve indoor air quality to meet health and safety standards.
Manager of Sheriff’s Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Services Peter Herbert, the local agent for UV Resources, said in a separate interview with Barbados TODAY, that the Ultra Violet lights were very effective in destroying moulds and bacteria growing on an air conditioning units.
“The lights are installed in the evaporator. It looks like a fluorescent light, but they are much smaller, however they destroy molds and bacteria growing in the air-conditioning units,” he added.
Todd said that the operation of Ultraviolet Germicidal Lights resulted in 99 per cent reduction of microbial and endotoxin concentrations within the ventilation systems resulting in significantly fewer work-related respiratory and muscosal systems.
She explained that their systems clean the coil and eliminate the manual chemical cleaning process and save energy in air-conditioning systems.
By adding the lights, hospitals, schools, hotels or any other buildings, there would be an improvement to the indoor air quality thereby removing the threat to workers’ health and reduce the number of man-hours lost due to illnesses.
The regional manager went on to say that proper ventilation helps to improve air quality and unlike outdoor air, indoor is constantly being recycled causing the ventilation system to trap and build up pollutants which could significantly reduce the quality of indoor air. (NC)
