KINGSTON – The Opposition Jamaica Labour Party is demanding the resignation of Minister of State in the Ministry of Transport Works Richard Azan as well as Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ), Dr Herbert Thompson.
At a hastily convened press conference at his office this morning, Opposition Leader Andrew Holness said he was giving Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller until Tuesday of next week to boot Azan as a junior Minister.
Failing this, Holness warned that the Opposition would be boycotting all sittings and activities of Parliament and all partnership arrangements that it has with Government.
Holness charged that the situation was not only an indictment on Azan but moreso on Simpson Miller, whom he said had allowed Jamaica’s image to be tarnished on the international landscape.
Holness revealed that said parish councillors would also be boycotting sessions of the Parish Councils as well as the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC).
Meanwhile Holness says the Opposition would be boycotting meetings of the ECJ if Thompson refuses to resign as its chairman.
Holness has taken issue with Thompson’s decision to attend a function of the People’s National Party earlier this week to collect an award on behalf of the ECJ for commitment to nation building.
Thompson has apologised to the Opposition Leader for attending the even without first informing him.
But Holness says he is not satisfied with Thompson’s explanation.
“I have written to the ECJ asking for a meeting with the members,” Holness told journalists. (Jamaica Gleaner)
