The way is now clear for the Barbados Government to buy over Almond Beach Village Resort in St.Peter. Yesterday, the shareholders agreed to the government’s bid offer to purchase the facility, which is expected to cost about US$55 million.
This was revealed this afternoon during the signing at Hilton Barbados Resort, of two memoranda of understanding between major global brand, Sandals Hotel and Beach Resorts.
One MOU will result in government leasing the Almond Village to Sandals which will operate it under its international brand, Beaches while the other contract, provides for Sandals to buy over the former Almond Casaurina property, in Dover, Christ Church, now Couples.
Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler and Director of Finance and Planning for Sandals Hotels and Beach Resorts Lisa Gomes signed MOUs. Also present at the signing was iconic hotelier and Chairman of Sandals, Gordon “Butch” Stewart. Sandals will take over Couples on November 6, while refurbishment work on Almond Village is due to begin in nine months.(EJ)
