Six Barbadians including veteran player/coach Floyd Reifer have been included in the Combined Campuses & Colleges (CCC) 14-man squad for the 2014 WICB NAGICO Super50 championship in Trinidad & Tobago from January 28 to February 16.
Apart from Reifer, a 41-year-old former West Indies captain and left-hand middle order batsman, who announced his retirement from the first-class four-day tournament last season, the other Barbadians are his cousin, Raymon Reifer, an all-rounder, who bats left-hand and bowls left-arm medium-pace; left-hand opening batsman Anthony Alleyne, top order batsman and former captain Kyle Corbin, all-rounder Kyle Mayers, a left-hand batsman and right-arm medium-pacer and experienced off-spinner Ryan Austin.
As announced earlier, the squad will be captained for the first time by Guyanese all-rounder Steven Jacobs, a middle order batsman, who bowls off-breaks.
There are four Jamaicans in wicket-keeper/batsman Chadwick Walton, who is a current West Indies One-Day International and Twenty20 player, attacking opening batsman Shacaya Thomas, leg-spinner Akeem Dewar and all-rounder Wayne Morgan, who bowls medium-fast; two Windward Islanders – Dominican all-rounder Kavem Hodge, a left-arm spinner and right-hand batsman, and Vincentian pacer Kesrick Williams – with left-arm spinner Kristopher Ramsaran of Trinidad & Tobago completing the squad.
No room was found for two of the top players in the three recent CCC trial matches – batsman Kyle Hope, who made 123 runs without being dismissed in all three matches, which he captained against Jacobs’ XI and fellow Barbadian, left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican, who took seven wickets for 50 runs off 25.2 overs including seven maidens, at an average of 7.14 and a very miserly economy rate of 1.97.
Based on the selection, however, it would appear that a quota system was in operation but Barbadians, as has been customary, still boasted of virtually half of the squad.
CCC finished second in last year’s Super50 championship, which was won by Windward Islands. (BCA)
