Chief executive officer of The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados Inc, Mrs Gina Pitts, recently commended the management of the Barbados Light & Power Company for valuing its employees.

She made these comments during a recent first aid training programme for Light & Power employees. The training stems from a partnership between the two organizations aimed at building awareness and improving health, wellness and safety.
The Heart & Stroke Foundation is a non-governmental organization, which is heavily dependent on membership fees and donations and the financial support of individual Barbadians to carry out its work. Their community goal is to reduce heart disease, which is the leading cause of death among Barbadian women, by 25 per cent by 2025.
BL&P’s human resources manager Roger Babooram, expressed his pleasure at partnering with the foundation.
“We are pleased to demonstrate our commitment to health and wellness in this manner, especially as it relates to our employees. Employee health and safety is given high priority at Light & Power and our programmes and equipment, such as the gyms and automated external defibrillator (AED) machines, provide daily and practical benefits to all employees. We are also delighted to have partnered with The Heart & Stroke Foundation in support of their national effort. We remain committed to our social responsibility, helping in the communities where we work and assisting at a time when it is increasingly difficult for community organizations to thrive on their own.”
Pitts followed these remarks stating: “We are thrilled that we have been given the opportunity to work with Light & Power. It shows that the company is forward thinking and prepared to support health. Clearly it has its employees in mind.”
Pitts explained that in this partnership arrangement they have provided nursing services for Light & Power’s wellness centre and they will continue to facilitate first aid/CPR training within the company.
“The people at the top are definitely looking out for your best interest,” she told the employees at the event.
Employees, in turn, showed their support of the foundation’s efforts by ‘going red’ to fight heart disease on National Wear Red day and participating in a company-wide raffle which will again help the foundation to reach their goal. (PR)
