PORT OF SPAIN – An Arouca man and a female passenger in his car were killed and three teenagers are in critical condition at hospital following a car crash in Chaguanas yesterday morning.
Rajesh Dwarika, of Fourth Street, and a woman whom police said was not yet identified, died at the scene of the crash along Uriah Butler Highway.
In hospital are Rohan Browne, 19, of Morvant, Precious McCarthy, 17, of San Juan, and Jade Chase, 17, of East Dry River, Port of Spain.
According to a report, fire officers of Chaguanas Fire Station, led by FSSO Mahadeosingh and DSO Rennie, went to the north-bound lane of the highway, in the vicinity of the Radio Trinidad Transmission station, where they discovered a white B-15 crashed into a utility pole.
The fire officers used the “jaws of life” cutting tool to remove the passengers from the vehicle.
Browne, McCarthy and Chase were taken to Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope.
Insp Jackman of Chaguanas Police Station and a party of police officers of the Central Highway Patrol Division visited the scene.
Police suspect the driver fell asleep and lost control of the vehicle.
Chaguanas police are continuing investigations.
In another incident, a 60-year-old Marabella man died on Saturday, four days after he was hospitalised for injuries he sustained in a car crash.
Police said Arjoon Mattadeen, of Tarouba Road, succumbed to his injuries at San Fernando General Hospital.
His wife, Sumintra Mattadeen, 55, remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.
According to a police report, around 7:10 p.m. on Wednesday, the Mattadeens were driving their Mazda 323 along Naparima-Mayaro Road when a Nissan B-15 Sentra, driven by Jameel Braithwaite, 22, of Palmyra Village, San Fernando, collided into theirs.
All the occupants of the vehicles were taken to hospital.
An autopsy is expected on Mattadeen’s body today at the San Fernando mortuary.
PC Flavinney of Ste Madeleine Police Station is continuing investigations.
And in another unrelated incident, a St Joseph man is in hospital in critical condition after his car crashed into a ten-wheeler truck in Caroni on Saturday.
Police said at around 11.30 a.m., Dominique Pullet, 29, was driving east along Old Southern Main Road, in the vicinity of La Paille Village, when he crashed head-on into the truck that was headed in the opposite direction.
He is in the Intensive Care Unit of Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex.
