Just the other day, while at a Crop Over party, the deejay was playing one of this year’s top Crop Over tunes, Ben’ Up by Porgie And Murda. Two songs later, he changed the script, playing Feeling by Leadpipe And Saddis. And, I overheard a lady say: “Who is these people? Dem sound real good.”
The man who was with her told her who they were. She did two things: questioned him on his sureness of the artistes; and then, as though stunned, uttered a few words which couldn’t be printed here.
This is the usual reaction from people unaware that Leadpipe and Porgie, Saddis and Murda are the same people –– Ozzie Reid and Reshawn Ince respectively.
“We were Leadpipe And Saddis before Porgie And Murda. So it is not really a shift,” Reshawn told Bajan Vibes.
The two gained some degree of notoriety last year with their 2014 hit Condense. From there it was their popular Porgie And Murda, series that can be seen on the Internet on their YouTube channel. Now in its second season, the series has had, at last check, over 60,000 views worldwide.
“Porgie And Murda is that aspect where you can come out and look forward to a fun-filled Crop Over every single year. Leadpipe And Saddis you know you are guaranteed to get some sweet soca music –– not only targeting Crop Over, but internationally.
“It is not only for Barbados; it is for the world. And Porgie, Murda, or Leadpipe, Saddis and the Most Wanted Crew, we are headed in [that] direction. There is now the band [Power Circle] and we are dropping our movie next month. Porgie and Murda, in the Unusual Suspects, is going to be a blast. It is rated PG; it is for the kids. We do this for the kids,” Ozzie (Leadpipe and Porgie) chimed in.
And it seems the dynamic duo are headed to take their brand of local entertainment far beyond these shore.
It is at this point the Edwin Newton steps into the picture. He is a 22-year-old rapper and producer from West London in England and goes by the name EcKSell.
“I’m the guy that’s taking Porgie And Murda to the UK. I came to Barbados to find the best of the best for my label . . . . I’ve been hearing this tune on the radio, Feeling, and I said I need to find these artistes.
“We found Porgie And Murda and [we’ve] invested in them to bring them out to the UK to the big screen for their reality show, and then for this song, to re-release [it] in the UK and remix [it] with some of the biggest deejays in the UK and Europe. And we are doing that next month,” EcKSell told Bajan Vibes.
EcKSell, whose father is Barbadian by birth, noted that the pair had what it took to get their distinct brand far beyond Barbados’ shores.
“I was listening to at least five tracks on the radio from them, and I’m like, ‘These guys are running stuff’, because they are branding themselves in the right way. I’ve got Hypasounds; I spoke to krosfyah today; Peter Ram; and we’re all making a massive album together,” he further revealed.
