A seven-member Barbados team is currently in Puerto Rico taking part in the 58th Amateur Caribbean Golf Championships.
Led by perennial national champion James Johnson, the team is competing in the Hoerman Cup and super-seniors divisions of the championships which are being played at Dorado Beach Resort.
Along with Johnson, other Hoerman Cup players are Simon Proverbs, Elvis Medford, Julian Jordan and Marcus Clarke while veteran national caps Robert Piggott and Ricky Skeete are seeking to add another title among the seniors. The manager/coach is Roger Beale Jr., while Barbados Golf Association president Cally Boyea is also accompanying the squad.
The 54-hole championships teed off yesterday and host team Puerto Rico set the early pace in individual stroke-play in the Hoerman Cup as two of their leading players posted competitive rounds. Edward Figueroa shot 71 and Erick-Juan Morales 73 in the first round.
Barbados’ top player James Johnson shot 76 and was five shots off the pace as at least two other players from the Dominican Republic registered one-over-par 73s.
Players from Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, USVI, Turks & Caicos, Bahamas are also contesting the championships.
The senior CGA Championships are following the 2014 Caribbean Amateur Junior Championships which were contested at the same venue last week and won by home team Puerto Rico with an overall team score of 161 points.
The Dominican Republic finished second on 136 points, while Trinidad & Tobago were third on 121. They were followed by the Bahamas and Jamaica, in a field where only six territories sent full teams to the competition.
