West Indies cricket selectors have named a 14-man ‘A’ team for a series in Sri Lanka that starts October 11.
Thirteen of the party have had international exposure with only Windward Islands’ batsman Sunil Ambris having never played for the senior regional side.
West Indies will play three unofficial Tests between October 11 and 28 and these will be followed by three one-dayers between November 1 and 5. The team is being led by Barbados bowling allrounder Carlos Brathwaite.
Legspinner Devendra Bishoo is named in the squad as are batsman Kirk Edwards and left-arm spinner Nikita Miller, who were dropped from West Indies’ ODI squad that will play in India in October.
Bishoo, 28, last played in the ‘A’ team in June 2012. He had played 11 Tests and 13 ODIs in 2011 and 2012 – including debuting in one-day internationals during the 2011 World Cup – but then his form fell away. In Guyana’s final first-class game last season, in April, he took 15 wickets against Trinidad & Tobago, and was subsequently picked in the Sagicor side that played the visiting Bangladesh A.
Opening batsman Kraigg Brathwaite is in the squad as the selectors obviously are seeking to keep him match-prepared for the Test leg of the Indian tour which will follow the One-Day Internationals. Brathwaite is not on that ODI squad. Jermaine Blackwood who is expected to make the Test leg of the India tour has also been selected in the West Indies ‘A’ team for Sri Lanka.
One glaring omission is Barbadian left-handed batsman Jonathan Carter. Carter starred on subcontinent pitches when he last toured India with the ‘A’ team. He is currently with the Barbados Tridents in India playing the Champions League Twenty20 Tournament.
Team: Carlos Brathwaite (capt), Sunil Ambris, Devendra Bishoo, Jermaine Blackwood, Kraigg Brathwaite, Sheldon Cotterrell, Miguel Cummins, Kirk Edwards, Andre Fletcher, Assad Fudadin, Shannon Gabriel, Nikita Miller, Shane Shillingford, Chadwick Walton (wk)
