Lodge Road’s B team, improving by the match, are through to this Sunday’s semi-finals of the Barbados Draughts Association team tournament.
They scored a surprise 27-13 win over their seniors yesterday evening and will now meet top of the table St Martins in one of two semi-final matches at Bush Hall from 6 p.m.
The other match-up brings together Lodge Road A and the Magicians led by Mike Barker and Kelso man Carson Farley to decide the other finalist.
St Martins completed the preliminary stage with a whopping 164 points from six wins. The Darwin Lorde side is the only unbeaten team at this stage, having benefited from the return of Rawle “Schoolboy” Williams and retention of stalwarts Richard Grazette and Cedric Fields.
Despite benefiting from the absence of one Lodge Road A member the B team played well in patches. The main surprise was a 1-0 win by experienced Carl David over Whitfield “Festus” Robinson. Robinson returned to trounce Matthew Barnett 2-0 in a losing cause.
With their win, Lodge Road B scraped into the semi-finals with 122 points, two more than St George who are now relegated to spectators. The Magicians qualified with the second highest points of 143 while Lodge Road A completed 143 points. Mayers Road B finished in the penultimate position on 78 points, three more than last placed Mayers Road A.
