Popcaan was the one they wanted! The Jamaican dancehall artist headlined the Arthur Guinness Concert held at Kensington Oval last Saturday; and he did not disappoint.
Popcaan closed the show, performing to a small but appreciative audience that seemed to be more of a “dancehall crowd”. He delivered hit after hit, patrons singing along word for word. The crowd could easily have been mistaken for one that had come straight from Kingston in Jamaica.
But it was Popcaan’s latest hit Everything Nice which the crowd was waiting on. It’s a song for the “hard-working people”, and the audience, who by this time had flocked to the front of the general and VIP areas, immersed themselves in it.
And, they were left asking for more, as the time limit did not permit any more performance.
Bugle, another headline act from Jamaica, was earlier well received too by the audience.
Vincentian soca artist Skinny Fabulous was unwell and thus unable to participate in the show.
It was the local acts who had to work somewhat hard to whip up a crowd that at times scattered across the venue.
Soca Kartel, featuring Blood and Mikey, showed their versatility, including many reggae hits in their set –– much to the delight of the audience.
Peter Ram also hyped up the crowd with his popular dub songs; and even free-styled a bit. Stiffy was also a crowd pleaser, though taking some time to “get into it”.
Other performers were Brutal, Imani, Project X, Benjai, Gorg, Biggie Irie, Leadpipe And Saddis, and Fadda Fox.
