Internationally acclaimed Indian singer Indira Naik and her devotional/light classical music group will stage a sunset concert at the Frank Collymore Hall tomorrow.
The group is on a Caribbean tour, which includes Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, Barbados and St Vincent and the Grenadines.
The Indian Consulate is organizing the Barbados visit for the world-renowned musical group, which has performed widely in the United States, the United Kingdom, Portugal and Brunei, as well as across India.
Honorary Consul Dr Mohini Harris has listed Naik among the great singers in her genre, such as Mehdi Hassan, Ghulam Ali, the late Jagjit Singh and Pankaj Udhas.
“Her voice is an instrument of beauty and power, of earthy sweetness and stark sensuality, evoking images of modern grace and old-world mysticism. Classically trained in the Patiala Gayaki, Indira’s music is a tribute to age-old traditions set against the backdrop of our times,” Harris said.
The Honorary Consul is encouraging all Barbadians to come out to the concert, not only the Indian community, but those with an interest in Indian culture.
“This is a unique opportunity for us here in Barbados to experience this talented artist free of charge, and I am looking forward to hosting a full audience at the Frank Collymore Hall,” Harris added.
The full band comprises lead singer Naik, Amar Sangam Das (guitar), Ustad Rashid Khan (violin), Samar Khan (tabla) and Supreet Gaikwad (keyboard).
