Barbados could soon become a movie-making hub.
International producers have begun showing interest in television and film production in the country in the wake of the recent announcement that the Cultural Industries Development Act would be proclaimed next month.
This latest announcement was made this morning by Minister of Culture and Youth Stephen Lashley, who was given a tour of booths on display at Sky Mall, Haggatt Hall. The exhibitors are all competitors in the second season of the reality television series Bank on Me that will be shown on 24 states across the Caribbean.
“Already we have had a lot of interest from, not only Barbadian film producers, but international film producers, to take advantage of those incentives and to do television and film production in Barbados,” Minister Lashley said.
After completing the tour, he said he was very proud and ‘blown away’ by what he saw.
“I was very impressed with the exhibitors in terms of the products and service I’ve seen on display here this morning. [They’re] certainly very innovative and what impressed me most was the level of confidence I’ve seen coming from these young entrepreneurs . . . and they’re very keen on moving ahead with what they’re offering,” he said, while expressing confidence in the export potential of the products and services.
“I would really hope that Barbadians would see what these young people are offering because I believe as a nation we need to be able to support our young entrepreneurs, and to also see the real potential of what’s being offered in Barbados.”
