Barbados’ stellar marketing efforts in Germany have earned the destination a prestigious sustainable tourism award.
The award was presented at the ITB Berlin, the leading trade fair for the worldwide travel industry, which will run until next Monday.
Minister of Tourism and International Transport Richard Sealy, accepted the Sustainable Destination Promotion on the German Market Award which was conferred by DERPART, one of the biggest and most successful travel sales and distribution companies in Germany with more than 450 travel agencies and over 30 years in the business.
Barbados’ delegation to ITB is being led by Sealy and includes a number of local partners who will work collectively to increase the island’s market share in that important European market.
Prior to the start of the March 4 to 9 tourism trade show, the minister joined his regional and international counterparts at the Travel Agent Magazine Tourism Minister Roundtable. On the agenda were discussions on some of the issues faced by established and emerging destinations, including attracting more visitors and offering a competitive tourism product
Chief Executive officer of the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc (BTMI) William Griffith said the Barbados team has a packed itinerary that will feature important meetings with the decision-makers of the key German tour operators selling packages to Barbados, among them Airtours, DER Touristik, FTI and Thomas Cook.
A statement from the BTMI said the strong presence of Barbados at the ITB 2015 reflects the importance of the German market for the island. Germany is the most important source market of Continental Europe for Barbados. In 2014, 12,030 Germans visited the island, 15.4 per cent more than in 2013.
