Japan to establish embassy in Barbados

The Government of Japan is moving ahead with its preparations to establish a Permanent Mission in Barbados by January 2016.

Japanese Ambassador Yoshimasa Tezuka updated Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Senator Maxine McClean on the move today during a courtesy call at the Ministry’s Culloden Road, St. Michael, location.

Senator McClean welcomed the Ambassador to Barbados and expressed the view that the establishment of a Japanese embassy here would strengthen the relationship between the two countries.

There was also some discussion of the two nations continuing to work together on issues related to disaster preparedness, the development of grassroots human security projects and renewable energy.

Japan’s permanent mission to Barbados will also be accredited to Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Christopher and Nevis, St. Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Barbados established diplomatic relations with Japan in 1967, and the bilateral relationship has since focused on direct foreign aid, technical cooperation, scholarships and training administered under the Japanese International Cooperation Agency.
