Four more days to go before Barbados host the 30th CARIFTA swimming championships at the Aquatic Center and head coach Antonio Petrolanda expects the home team which consist of 20 athletes to finish in the top three of the medal standings.
Petrolanda told Barbados TODAY they have a very strong team which included the likes of captain Alexander Sobers, Jack Kirby and Luis Sebastian Weekes who should bring some experience to the table among the male swimmers. Among the females captain Alexis Clarke, Hannah Gill, Rebecca Lashley, Sariyah Sherry and Danielle Titus will carry the torch.
“There are only five newcomers to the team so this is an experienced team and we have a couple swimmers we expect to do very well and I believe we can be in the top three by way of medals,” he said.
The championship will commence this Saturday, conclude on April 8 and will feature the first ever open water CARIFTA race to take place in Barbados since its introduction in 2008.
About 75 swimmers from 20 different nations have registered for the open water event which will take place on the final day at Brown’s Beach. Damon St Prix, Jonathan Manning, Nicholas Hall, Kobi Talma, Gabrielle Dupigny and Alexis Clarke are expected to compete in the open water which is over 5K. There will be live streaming of the open water event done by Gear Studios Inc.
Ace swimmer Christian Selby will not compete due to injury and Petrolanda described this as very unfortunate but said he was confident in the team and looked forward to a great showing in the pool from the local swimmers.
