Barbados obtained an additional 13 medals at the end of day three of the 30th CARIFTA Swimming Championships at the Aquatic Center, Wildey, last night.
The ultramarine, gold and black continued to fly high as Barbados’ medal count reached 37 behind Bahamas’ 41 and Trinidad and Tobago’s 31 with tonight’s action being the final day of competitive action in the pool. Aruba with 27 medals and Guadeloupe on 18 are also putting up a fight to stay among the top five. Barbados ended the night in second place on 468.5 points, behind front-runners Bahamas’ 559.50 points and ahead of the third-placed Trinidad and Tobago on 398.50.
Barbadian golden boy Nkosi Dunwoody was in superb form as he captured two of Barbados’ nine gold medallions last night which were complemented by two silvers and a similar number bronze.
Dunwoody set the pace in the boys 11-12 200m individual medley which he won comfortably in 2:25.92 ahead of Lucca Batrin of Guadeloupe in 2:29.49. Dunwoody, a student of Harrison College, was a dominant force to reckon with in the finals of the 50m breaststroke which he won in 34.28.
Prior to Dunwoody’s performance local girl Danielle Titus started yesterday’s proceedings off with a bang in the 11-12 ladies individual medley which was the first final event of the day. She swam 2:36.31 ahead of the 2:37.97 by teammate Ashley Weekes who took silver. In the 100m freestyle Titus had to settle for silver with a time of 1:03.25 which could not par with the 1:02.34 by Ali Jackson of the Cayman Islands.
Meanwhile Weekes managed to redeem herself by clocking 37.10 to win the 11-12 50m breaststroke. While in the 200m butterfly she was third in 2:44.11 behind Jahmia Harley of Trinidad and Tobago in 2:38.29 and the 2:38.62 by Naelle Portecop of Guadeloupe.
It was definitely a good night for the hosts as Luis Sebastian Weekes delivered a gutsy performance to clock 2:15.37 and take gold in the boys 13-14 200m individual medley ahead of main rival Yael Touw Ngie Tjouw of Suriname who came second in a time of 2:15.63.
Damon St Prix earned bragging rights when he staved off all competition to win the 13-14 boys 100m freestyle in 54.69. St Prix however had to settle for bronze in the 200m equivalent in a time of 2:14.97 behind silver medallist Tjouw (2:14.89) and eventual winner Kael Yorke of Trinidad and Tobago whose 2:13.76 was a cut above the rest.
Congratulations were in order for Barbadian Kendi Bynoe who won gold in the girls 13-14 200m freestyle. Bynoe’s 2:32.41 was an easy breeze as she streaked to victory ahead of Racine Ross of Trinidad and Tobago (2:33.86) and Emma Harvey of Bermuda (2:34.51).
Barbados captured gold in the 13-14 boys and 15-17 girls 800m freestyle relay thanks to efforts from St Prix, Weekes, Jack Kirby and Kobi Talma who won in 8:21.84 but did not challenge the record in any way. Meanwhile on the ladies end Alexis Clarke, Kimberley Willoughby, Sariyah Sherry and Hannah Gill all put in a good showing to take the ladies showdown in 8:55.08.
The curtain came down on this year’s CARIFTA Swimming Championships with a closing ceremony this evening.
Tomorrow there will be an open 5k race commencing at Carlisle Bay about 8 a.m.
