UWI Blackbirds came out victorious 2-0 against the National Sports Council in their first meeting of this year’s Barbados Football Association’s Women’s Premier League on Saturday.
Playing at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex, Blackbirds got on the scoresheet just before half-time when Soraya Toppin-Herbert netted in the 39th minute. The score would remain 1-0 going into the break.
It was a battle of attrition on resumption with NSC trying to find the equalizer while the Blackbirds looked to create even more daylight between themselves and the sports council ladies. It was the Blackbirds’ efforts that bore fruit when in the 70th minute Colleen Johnson settled the game with another strike.
In a second game on Saturday played at the Wildey, St Michael Astro Turf, Genesis and Mavericks played to a 1-1 draw. Mavericks took the lead in the 44th minute through Felicia Jarvis, while Makayla Alleyne found the equalizer for Genesis in the 65th minute.
