ST JOHN’S –– The father of a four-year-old girl was yesterday stabbed to death in the presence of his mother — a gruesome killing which has shocked the quiet Sea View Farm community.
Twenty-nine-year old Shane “Watches” James, a chef by profession, was awaiting a bus outside a village shop with his mother and another relative, when he met his tragic end.
“Three people jumped out of a car and just started stabbing him,” a family member told the Observer.
The incident occurred just about 2:30 p.m.
At press time, police sources said two young men were assisting them in their investigations, while a third was on the run.
James was reportedly stabbed several times about the body, before he ran to a nearby house and then collapsed. He reportedly died while being transported to hospital via ambulance.
During the time that the ordeal unfolded, it’s reported that his mother looked on helplessly and in shock.
A family member, who did not want to be named, said James’ mother, who has been assisting police with their investigations was visibly shaken and struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.
Shane had three siblings — two brothers and one sister. He is also survived by his parents Victor and Maudlyn James.
Neighbours and friends, who gathered on the scene, said James was “cool” but did not deny that he had had a troubled past.
They said the deceased was involved in an altercation with a gang of Jamaican nationals days earlier.
In a 2010 Observer feature, James, who has a criminal past, told the Obsever he had turned a new leaf in life, and had left the culture of gangs, drugs and crime behind.
