FLORIDA –– Jailed Jamaican reggae star Buju Banton will be out of prison in less than four years, after striking a deal with United States prosecutors that would see him dodging a pending gun charge.
The US Attorney’s Office disclosed yesterday that in exchange for waiving all appeals related to his 2011 conviction on a cocaine distribution conspiracy charge, Buju, whose real name is Mark Myrie, will no longer face the firearms charge.
He had been convicted on the gun count in 2011 as well, but the conviction was thrown out. However, an appeals court upheld it. A new trial was subsequently ordered after the court found that a juror had inappropriately researched a legal theory relating to the charge.
If the prosecutors had proceeded with the case and Buju was convicted, he would have faced an additional five years in prison.
Buju will be out of prison in January 2019. He will be deported to Jamaica on his release.
