Makaari Jones continues to impress in the Co-operators General Insurance-sponsored National Sports Council’s Junior Basketball Competition and this afternoon his game-high 24 points propelled Queen’s College to a 60-27 over hosts Ellerslie Secondary.
Jones who plays forward was the only person to get into double figures but that did not matter because Queen’s College had an all-round team effort that allowed them to command the first three quarters 16-3, 42-13 and 55-21 and went on to take the game away from their opponents.
Seven of Queen’s 16 points in the opening quarter came from Jones while forward Gavin Ward who ended the game with nine contributed two and Jordan Lounges also scored four of his six points in that quarter. Ellerslie center Shaquille Chase who top-scored with ten for his team managed to score just two along with one from Shamar Duplesis.
In the second half Queen’s College continued from where they left off with Jones who netted eight, while Rasheed Arthur who finished the game with eight points scored six in that half along with Dijon Hunte who also notched another six points in that quarter which was perhaps the best half for him in the entire game.
Ellerslie tried to improve their defensive efforts to prevent the easy baskets which Queen’s College were scoring but they scarcely stemmed that tide.
Ellerslie’s point guard Renico Brewster scored eight points for Ellerslie and got some assistance, even if insufficient, from Chase, Rashawn Haynes, Kejahne Ward and Donte Phillips who scored two each by the end of that quarter. Jones continued to attack Ellerslie in the paint with contributions of two points each from Howard, Arthur, Grimes and Lounges.
As the game headed to its end and with Queen’s College in a very dominant position they opted to bring on some fresh leg and basically cleared their bench. Ellerslie clearly took a liking to the subs and tallied 11 points to Queen’s College’s five during this stretch. But the Husband’s, St James had long done their damage and despite some freebies for Chase, Brewster, Haynes as well as Tyrell Rayside-Demendonca, the result was never in doubt.
