The drama usually associated with accused and their loved ones in the yard of the Bridgetown magistrates’ courts was averted yesterday.
Despite a heavy presence of onlookers waiting to see eight young men and one woman charged in relation to a recent spate of burglaries, policemen were posted under the arch so that only persons legitimately doing business with the court could enter the yard.
As the accused left the courtroom later, a police van drove to the bottom of the step to collect the eight men. When the last one got inside where they all sat hunched over and close together, and the door was being closed, one of the men asked the police officers “In here ain’t got no AC?”
The crowd, meanwhile, was only able to clearly see the lone female accused, Samantha Jack, since she returned to the cells on foot. As she smiled and waved to her relatives and friends, there were shouts of “Stand strong”, and “We love you”.
