Tennis coach Paul Stewart recovered from a five-stroke to serve reigning Lodge Road Masters champion Junior “Post” Waldron a 1-0 ace in a losing cause for Lumber Jacks as the John Walcott Memorial Team Draughts Tournament continued Sunday.
In his previous match last week Stewart had suffered a rare five-stroke at the hands of Cedric Fields of St Martins but salvaged a draw. “Post” Waldron had no such luck against Stewart, now known as “five-stroke” Paul.
Stewart’s team, however, crashed under the might of St. George, led by Jack Francis 15-25 as St George went ahead in the tournament on 139 points, six more than defending champions St Martins.
Waldron has also been beaten by another unknown player, Tyrone Moore, who needs help playing the pieces due to physical handicaps.
In another giant-killing result Mark Barnett, representing Lodge Road B, continued an outstanding but inconsistent run with a 1-0 defeat of experienced Michael Barker. But Barker’s Magicians led by Carson Farley, who put down Barnett 1-0, kept alive their chances of reaching the semi-finals with a 25-15 lesson for the Lodge Road B players.
Lodge Road A were restricted to a 24-16 victory over Mayers Road Lions at Lodge Road, a match in which veteran Nathaniel “Thani” Grosvenor maintained his good form with 1-0 victories over Edward Moore and Basil Cumberbatch.
The big match-up Sunday at Jo-Jo’s, Carlton and A1 supermarket at Black Rock brings together leaders St George and St Martins.
