Two ruthless performances from Darius “Barracus” Gaskin and Julian “Michael Jackson” White propelled them into the semifinals of the Barbados Public Workers’ Co-operative Credit Union Limited Monarchs of the Court road tennis competition, when action continued at the Wildey, St Michael Court last night.
Gaskin was in a no-nonsense mood against fellow junior Dario Hinds, as he blasted shots all around the court on his way to a 21-17, 21-12 victory.
After taking a closely contested first set, Gaskin upped the ante.
His accurate attacking play didn’t allow the defensive-minded Hinds to settle, as his powerful shots continually left his opponent a mere spectator.
In fact, Hinds was spared the ignominy of being sowed in the second set after Gaskin deliberately sent the ball into the net to allow him to reach double digits.
White wasn’t as merciful against another junior in Emar Edwards however, as he crushed him 21-18, 21-5 in the nightcap.
It was an unexpected score line, with many spectators having predicted a close game, while some even went as far as to forecast a victory for the Combermere schoolboy.
And while it was indeed a close game in the opening set, White showed his class and why he is considered a favourite to take the title by superbly outplaying Edwards in the second set.
Gaskin will meet the winner of tonight’s clash between Mark “Venom” Griffith and Marson Johnson in the semis, while White awaits either Kerry “TC” Francis or Charles “McEnroe” Griffith in the other semifinal.
In the ladies division, Sheldene Walrond recorded an easy straight sets victory over Susan Scantlebury 21-10, 21-16 to advance to the semifinals, while last year’s losing finalist Rachel Smith brushed aside Carolyn “The Model” Haynes 21-8, 21-13 to also book her spot among the final four.
