The Barbados national senior women’s hockey team in Peru ended their second day of the 2015 Pan American Challenge in Chiclayo, Peru, with a 5-0 win over Puerto Rico today.

Patrina “Pixie” Brathwaite opened the scoring for Barbados with an early field goal in just the 6th minute of the match. Three minutes later, young international Jada Prescod netted for Barbados with her first goal in just her second match.

The second period of the match saw no goals from either side. However, Barbados kept on pressing ahead and in the 37th minute, power forward Keisha Boyce, wife of the national men’s team captain Andre Boyce, slotted home her second goal of the tournament to give Barbados a 3-0 lead heading into the final quarter.

The women weren’t content though, and in the 53rd minute Tammisha Small converted a Barbados penalty corner with a convincing drag flick making it 4-0 in Barbados’ favour.

With just five minutes remaining in regulation time, Brathwaite closed off proceedings with another field goal to give Barbados the comprehensive win over Puerto Rico.

The win today placed the Barbados women at the top of the pool after the second day of competition, with full points from their two matches.

Brathwaite and Small currently share the top spot on the tournament’s leading goal-scorers board with four goals each.

Yesterday Barbados’ women opened the tournament in style against Panama. Barbados dominated the Central Americans, routing them 10-0 in a total team effort.

Scoring the goals for Barbados were Keisha Jordan in the 2nd minute, Ayanna Wilson in the 10th and 56th minutes, Small in the 21st, 47th and 51st minutes, D’Jamila Edwards in the 22nd minute, Brathwaite in the 23rd  and 50th, and Tricia-Ann Greaves in the 25th minute.

Dr Kristina Hinds-Harrison in her debut as custodian managed a shut out for Barbados.

Panama were able to curtail the scoring in the 3rd quarter when Barbados, while still spending most of the quarter in Panama’s 23, were unable to convert and add to their earlier goal rush. This was the second heavy loss by Panama who also went down 7-0 to Brazil.

Barbados will face-off against Brazil this Wednesday  at 2 p.m. local time.

The Pan American Challenge is being held in Chiclayo, Peru, 765 km north of Lima. The finalists in the Challenge will qualify for the prestigious 2017 Pan American Cup, the FIH’s Hockey World Cup qualifier for the Pan American region.
