The 2015 David King Memorial Inter-club Badminton Tournament served off last night at the Wildey Gymnasium with a record 13 teams.
After a two-year break the competition returned with the national Juniors A team getting their campaign off to a good start when they defeated Pioneers 5-0. In singles action Amanda Haywood was victorious 21-7 and 21-8 against Emily Thomas who found the going tough against the national under-19 women’s champion.
In the men’s singles national under-19 men’s champion Shae Martin made light work of Nicholas Howard 21-8 and 21-3.
Krystal Clarke and Ashlee Robinson teamed up in the women’s doubles for Juniors against Robyn Sobers and Emily Thomas who lost the encounter 27-25 in a close first set and they just drifted away 21-12 in the second set. Then in the men’s doubles Nicholas Sobers came back to play with Gavin Robinson against Shomari Smith and Aren Cupples and won in straight sets.
Haywood and Martin then teamed up in mixed doubles for Juniors A and took on Shomari Smith and Robyn Sobers who just could not match up to the under-19 king and queen who stamped their authority 21-7 and 21-6.
The national junior B team also managed to grab a 3-2 win over West Coast. While the over 40s edged Pioneers B 3-2 that was followed by Shuttlers C defeating Pioneers C 4-1. Pioneers E were beaten convincingly 5-0 by a dominant Shuttlers B side.
Games continue tonight and tomorrow at the Wildey Gymnasium.
