Myles Alleyne led from the front for St Cyprian’s when he scored 21 not out and captured three wickets to help his side defeat St Matthew’s Primary by 33 runs today at Bagatelle, St Thomas.
Alleyne’s all-round performance has allowed St Cyprian’s Boys to reach the quarterfinal round of the Guardian Group-sponsored National Sports Council’s Herman Griffith Primary Schools Cricket competition.
St Matthew’s won the toss and elected to bowl after the overs were reduced from 25 to 20 due to a late start. St Cyprian’s posted 96 for three from their allotted overs thanks to a top score of 24 from Alex Stewart and Jaden Webster’s 20.
In response St Matthew’s were restricted to 63 for eight from their 20. Elijah Mayers, who had earlier taken two wickets for 17 runs, made 16 while Shaquan Doyle contributed 12 runs to St Matthew’s effort..
Alleyne’s three wickets cost him a mere ten runs while medium pacer Fazlo Brewster with three wickets for nine runs also created lots of problem for St Matthew’s batsmen. Several of them played across the line and were either bowled or went by the lbw route.
The quarterfinal round of the competition will begin tomorrow at Friendship when Milton Lynch take on St Stephen’s. Meanwhile on Thursday St Cyprian’s and Gordon Greenidge will face off at Desmond Haynes Oval while Eden Lodge and Bayley’s Primary will do battle at Passage Road. (ML)
