Accused man shot himself in the foot

A presentencing report has been ordered on a man who pleaded guilty to a robbery and a firearm offence before Justice Jacqueline Cornelius in the No. 5 Supreme Court on Thursday.

That man was Jamal Omar McCollin, 25, of Clifton Hill, St Philip.

In outlining the facts before the court, Principal Crown Counsel Lancelot Applewaite said that McCollin and another man robbed Ramon Beckles of a chain, and had a firearm while doing so.

In a statement to police, McCollin shared how he and a second man were driving together on November 13, 2011, in the Gall Hill, Christ Church area when they saw a man standing on a step chatting with a woman.

The other man suggested that they go back and rob Beckles, telling McCollin that he would not have to do anything. When they returned and the victim refused to hand over the chain, McCollin got out of the car and pointed a gun at him. McCollin’s accomplice then snatched the jewellery from the complainant’s neck.

Later, when the other man asked McCollin to hold on to the gun, he squeezed the trigger and it went off, shooting him in his left foot.

McCollin then asked his friend to take him to his girlfriend’s house but while there he began “to feel real bad”. It was while making his way to the hospital that a police vehicle intercepted the one he was in.

During an interview, McCollin told them he had no idea what happened to the chain but he showed police the gun.

The convicted man returns to court on January 29, 2016 and was remanded at HMP Dodds until such time.

  • This is not a bad idea, we must teach our criminals in Barbados, but using the upper part of they bodies.

  • Cudda been worse. Like the would-be bank idiot/robber/killer, in Oregon last year, whose gun mis-fired as he held-up a teller. He looked down the barrel, and pulled to see what was amiss. Nothing-the second time around...it worked perfectly.
    Adios...one less bank robber.

  • I hope the Police were smart enough to pay the girlfriend a visit later and see how much/if any loot was stashed there, for I doubt this was their first robbery. In fact girlfriends of both of them.
