By the time David Orlando Straker gets out of jail the crop season will be over.
The Edgehill, St Thomas man will spend the next six months behind bars after pleading guilty to stealing 350 pieces of cane last Friday.
Straker went before the District ‘D’ Magistrates Court yesterday where Magistrate Ian Weekes handed down the sentence to the repeat offender.
Straker confessed to stealing the cane belonging to the Barbados Agricultural Management Company on February 19.
Prosecuting, Sergeant Glenda Carter-Nicholls said that on receiving information police officers went to Content, St Thomas where they saw Straker standing at a bus stop with a crocus bag and a haversack filled with cane.
When police questioned the 36-year-old, he told them that he had just cut the cane from Dukes Plantation and was carrying it to town to sell. Lawmen later learnt that he had no permission from Dukes Plantation management to either reap or sell the crop.
