16 prisoners have died and five other people were injured in a riot at the Camp Street Prison in Guyana today.
Angry inmates set fires at the Georgetown Prison and battled prison guards and police with sticks from damaged beds after a search.
During the search more than a dozen cellphones and a quantum of narcotics were seized.
Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan has described the situation as a crisis and he has ordered an immediate investigation.
A three-member panel is expected to begin the probe tomorrow.
