It’s beginning to look a lot like the Gold Cup, Everywhere you go, Took a look in the Savannah today, all spruced up again, Horses were getting prepped, Owners starting to sweat, Fans eager to bet, With tomorrow on the horizon.
It’s quite a few months from the Yuletide season, but there was excitement aplenty and a terrific buzz in the air on Gold Cup eve today at the Garrison Savannah. Members of the Barbados Turf Club family were out in full force as they made final preparations for the annual staging of the island’s premier horse racing event – the Sandy Lane Gold Cup.
Ten horses will start the race tomorrow and Barbados TODAY took in some of the activity as a number of them, including the favourite of many – War Envoy – had a pre-race gallop.
Owners, trainers, jockeys and ancillary staff were all busy either discussing tomorrow’s big race, their chances, putting their mounts through their paces, or just simply taking a look at the track. Workers were also sprucing up the facility ensuring that it was not only physically ready, but also aesthetically pleasing.
Among those at the Garrison Savannah was owner of the 2015 Gold Cup winner, Ken Ramsey. He was very optimistic that champion horse Sayler’s Creek would give a good account of itself tomorrow. Ramsey said his other entrant, Watchyourownbobber, had an equally good chance of crossing the finish line first.
The American was particularly pleased that he would have champion jockey Patrick Husbands and last year’s Gold Cup winner Rico Walcott astride his two horses.
Tomorrow’s line-up will feature: Sayler’s Creek (Rico Walcott); Watchyourownbobber (Patrick Husbands); War Envoy (Mario Pino); Dorsett (Jalon Samuel); Just A Fashion (Antonio Bishop); Indiano Jones (Phillip Makin); Dashing David (Kyle Carter); Marcus Antonius (Anderson Trotman); Daunting David (Antonio Whitehall); Derby Kitten (Chris Husbands).
