Top Barbadian surfer Chelsea Roett has won the Association of Professional Surfing’s recent Corona Extra Pro at the Domes, in Puerto Rico.
Roett got off to a positive start by winning her first heat and continued her ripping form by dominating all her other heats right through to the finals. But then she left the best for last.
The talented surfer stepped up her game in the final by posting the event’s overall top three wave scores of 7.67, 6.77 and 6.60.
Roett later disclosed that during her semi-final and final heat the conditions became a bit more challenging as the West winds picked up and there was also a cross swell running through the break.
“It just meant I had to be very selective in which waves I caught and I also had to manage the priority to find the best waves as they had to be the ones that allowed me highest scoring potential,” Roett said.
Roett noted this was her first trip to Puerto Rico and that she really enjoyed surfing in the Corona Extra Pro. She described those she interacted with in Puerto Rico as very welcoming throughout the event.
“I am really looking forward to going back to Puerto Rico to defend and keep my title at the next contest, the people there are so nice and really love surfing.”
Roett had started her 2016 overseas programme in the World Surf League Women’s Qualifying Series in California where she placed fifth.
The affable athlete expressed thanks to Dan and Sandra Olson of Women’s Surf Style Magazine and their “Surf House” for being with her every step of the way in Puerto Rico. She also thanked her sponsors, Flow Barbados, Oakley, Cashwiz Barbados, Move 2 More Fitness, Tonic Hair Care, She Project, Speaqua Sounds, Bajan Cherry Swimwear, Suga Apple Swimwear and Imsy Swimwear.
