GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Some of Barbados’ best young boxers will be in action at the first Schoolboys and Juniors Boxing Tournament scheduled for April 29 and 30 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Guyana.
President of the Guyana Boxing Association, Steve Ninvalle confirmed that secretary of the Barbados Boxing Association Kathy Harper-Hall had informed his association of Barbados’ participation. Jamaica and St Lucia will also take part in the competition.
The tournament comes at a time when Guyana has placed itself at the vanguard of the development of the sport in the region. Ninvalle who was last year elected to serve on the International Amateur Boxing Association, AIBA’s council, has been pushing for the development of the sport in Guyana and the region and has received the support of his regional counterparts.
Last November Guyana organized the 13-country Caribbean Development Tournament which had the largest gathering of regional nations for any sporting activity in over a decade.
In 2014 Guyana hosted a four-nation Goodwill competition which saw Trinidad, Jamaica and St Lucia competing here.
The competition promises to be a slugfest among the youngsters as they seek glory for their respective countries.
