Whatever Peter Ram gets, he’s taking. And he’s thankful.
Almost a year later, he is still on a high with his hit song All Ah We. The song has won him Party Monarch, Road March, Stag Jam Tune, Male Entertainer Of The Year and Making It Against The Odds. He also made it with the song to the finals of the International Soca Monarch competition in Trinidad.
Today, Ram is celebrating his song hitting over one million views on the popular social media site YouTube. At present, it is at 1,009,300; and Ram says it is quite unbelievable.
“It’s a beautiful thing. Like I’m always saying, you have to give credit to the people. Because it’s the people who made those views happen to All Ah We. The people see it and the people are liking the vibes. That’s why it add up to over a million,” he said.
Ram told Bajan Vibes in a relaxed interview at Gun Hill, St George, that when he found out, he had to celebrate with his people at home.
“I found out about it sometime last week after I returned from a trip. I checked my home boys downtown. Then I looked on Instagram. I saw a lady by the name of Bajanhaitian, or something like, that was giving me some love and nuff blessings. So I asked myself, ‘What’s this?’, and then when I peeped I see the views.
“I said, ‘Wow!’ and I gave thanks. And we started to celebrate down by Club Marina.
“So I really give thanks,” he added.
But amidst all the success, Ram said he never imagined the song would have done so well. In fact, he said the song All Ah We was given to him as a last shot, and was actually in the trash.
“When I got the song, I had a nice vibe from beginning to end; but I never thought the song would fly so. It was a while that I didn’t step back to the Red Boys. I was doing my own thing –– my bashment and crankment.
“I wanted to go back with them, but I knew I couldn’t go back without a tune. At the same time, I met Shaft and he asked me why I don’t come and let him build tunes for me. I told him
I didn’t have Shaft money. But he said don’t worry about it.
“He showzzed me a few songs like Dip And Roll, Addicted, and a couple more; but I didn’t really feel them. I said this isn’t Ram. So I told Red Boyz if they heard anything, just hit me up.
“And they linked me and said, ‘We have one more here; this one was in the trash. So I told them let me hear it. What they sent was All Ah We. I had it on pause. I planned everything and
it worked,” he explained.
Ram further told Bajan Vibes he knew others had underestimated him; and his dropping the song late was all a strategy. He said going back with the Red Boys was the magic for him.
“When the season started, I dropped my first tune with John Doe –– Sofa Kings. It got us in a li’l trouble and thing, and bans from certain places. They thought that was all I had coming; but they were wrong. They didn’t know what I had cooking.
“I was advertising. I was going back to De Red Boys. Me and Biggie Irie were the first ones to have big hits in soca music with De Red Boys with Nah Going Home and Woman By My Side. Nuff respect and blessings to the Red Boys,” he said.
And as for this year, Ram wants his fans and well-wishers to know “it’s nothing but pace; so hold tight”.
“I’m ready. I got the song in my head. Recording soon. So prepare wunna self. This year is going to be rough, because I’m defending my thing strong. I already have the song. How we coming now is a different thing.
“Last year, I released the rhythm first live on radio. Got the people dancing and so on; then I shell it. This year I’m doing it different. You will get your hat with the name of the tune, a shirt and so on.
“Giving them out to the people at certain fetes, so you can get an idea of what is to come,” he said, adding fans could expect the tune sometime in June or July.
As for other competitions, Ram is “holding off” in order to put his all into Party Monarch.
“I have one tune for Pic-O-De Crop, but I know it will cause trouble. I will definitely be doing social commentary in 2017. But this year, I want to focus and put all the energy in defending my crown. So the others have to come real hard,” he said with a chuckle.
However, he isn’t forgetting about his bashment music for the fans.
“I done record a bashment tune. Me and my sistren Nikita. We did one with Renegade. So listen out for that. Also listen out for a fast one. People are saying the fast tunes are dead and we not hearing much. So we have to bring it back. I told Gorg to use a rhythm that used to mash up the place before and put a new song on it,” Ram revealed.
He told Bajan Vibes he was very proud of the work Bajan artistes were doing and was looking forward to hearing the music for 2016.
“Bajan artistes are producing some sweet music. Even have outside artistes coming through for music.”
