Danielle Titus and Hannah Gill were in record-breaking form on Day 2 of the 31st CARIFTA Swimming Championships in Martinique yesterday evening.
Fresh from striking gold in the 800m freestyle on Tuesday’s opening day, Titus won the gold medal in the 13-14 age group of the 100m backstroke in a CARIFTA best time of 1.06.58, that also beat the national record set by Amara Gibbs of 1:07.99 back in July 2011. Competing in the Girls’ 15-17 200m freestyle, Gill swam a time of 2:08:55 to eclipse Lani Cabrera’s 2011 national record of 2:09:06. That swim earned Gill the bronze medal.
It was a day when Barbados added five gold, two silver and six bronze medals to their Tuesday tally of 13 medals. Those consisted three gold, six silver and four bronze.
Also in gold medal-winning form yesterday were Alex Sobers who won the boys’ age 15-17 200m freestyle in 1:53:61; Tristan Pragnell in the 11-12 100m backstroke in 1:07:88 and the boys 11-12 4x100m medley relay in a time of 4:41:80. Pragnell, Roan Baker, Eric Lashley and McCallum Clarke comprised the team. Clarke also added to his record-breaking 200m breaststroke swim on Tuesday by winning the 400m individual medley in a time of 5:12:33 yesterday.
Titus added to her medal collection by winning silver in the 400m individual medley in a time of 5:17:64 while Danielle Treasure also took silver in the girls’ 11-12 100m backstroke in a time of 1:11:67.
Clarke continued his impressive showing yesterday by taking bronze in the 200m freestyle in a time of 2:12:45. Treasure finished third in the 200m freestyle in 2:18:93 to add to Barbados’ medal tally. Ashley Weekes stopped the clock at 5:28:17 for the bronze medal in the age 13 to 14 400m individual medley. Luis Sebastian Weekes, competing in the 15 to 17 age group, won the bronze in the 400m individual medley in 4:47:76.
The foursome of Titus, Weekes, Destiny Harding and Zoe Taylor also won a bronze medal when they finished third in the 4x100m medley relay in a time of 4:49:31.(WG)
