If Abayomi Yohhannes Lopez does not come up with $750 within the next month, he will have to do the alternative of six weeks in prison.
Lopez, a 24-year-old student, admitted to Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant that he had 4.6 grammes of marijuana on him last Thursday.
He lives at Belfield, Black Rock, St Michael.
In outlining the case to the court, Sergeant Neville Reid said that police stopped the car in which Lopez was the front seat passenger. Both the vehicle and its occupants were searched and it was during the search that nine wax paper wrappings of the substance fell out after Lopez removed his left shoe.
When he was questioned by police about the drug, he replied: “I get dah off the Red Sea [block].”
The accused man also appealed to the magistrate for leniency.
“I am trying to better myself . . . I made a foolish mistake,” he told the court.
He added that he had “just gone back to school and would like a chance.
“I want to say sorry to you and the court mam,” he said.
