Barbadians went to St Mary’s Anglican Church in their hundreds last night to vent their choral chords in a standing room-only HymnSpeak evening of the Barbados Gospelfest 2016 season.
Led by Reverend Dr Mikie Roberts, the congregation joined with the HymnSpeak Voices, Bethel Chimers, John Bryan on organ, Mark Forde on steel pan, members of the Brass Ensemble, and members of the Combo for just over two hours of hymnody in unison.
In between filing the almost 200-year-old hallowed St Mary’s Church hall with harmoniously renditioned hymns, last night’s assembly of Gospelfest: Touching Lives, Changing Nations also brought out testimonials from Barbadian young men on the events in their lives that had made believers of them.
HymnSpeak was the third event of Gospelfest 2016 that has nine engagements across Barbados.
Rev. Roberts told worshippers that last night’s focus was on the Cross.
“Even though Jesus is this man of sorrows, we are not mourning the Cross; we are celebrating the Cross. We are giving God thanks and praise for the Cross, because had it not been for the Cross there would be no gift of salvation.
“So this evening as we journey through this year’s worship experience, let us keep at the centre of our minds the Cross of Jesus Christ.”
Gospelfest (Barbados) Inc., the organizers of this annual event, have stated it “exists to produce Barbados Gospelfest, the premier international Christian music and arts festival promoting the life-changing impact of the Holy Spirit in all persons who make contact with the festival”.
