Shanice Cox, Kenya Best and Jeremiah McCollin, all Lower Sixth students of Queen’s College, yesterday showed their innovation and creativity when they displayed how recycling of old tyres could be made into useable, durable furniture at the Sagicor Visionairies Challenge.
The students informed the public that between 7,000 and 8,000 tons of old tyres were sent to the landfill every month, and that more recently an increased number were being dumped across Barbados. Their ideas for creating sturdy, long-lasting furniture for the community, whereby easing the heavy burden which used tyres was putting on the island was received with enthusiasum.
MQI provided the students with the tyres and the money to create the pieces of furniture which they displayed with pride.
Chairs and a coffee table, light fixtures and a make-up mirror were all on display.
