Jamaicans Jeffrey Panton and Mike Fennell ended yesterday’s second day of the 2016 Sol Rally Barbados in lead position after 14 stages, with an overall elapsed time of 38 minutes, 7.43 seconds.
The pair who are the defending champions, were in sizzling form in their Ford Focus WRC and for most of the day kept ahead of the second placed French pair of Simon Jean-Joseph and co-driver Jack Boyere whose time was 38 minutes, 43.90 seconds. They were behind the wheel of a Ford Focus WRC08.
The Welshmen Elfyn Evans and Craig Parry in a Ford Fiesta R5 Evo were running third in an elapsed time of 38 minutes, 52.81 seconds.
Sol Rally giant Roger “The Sheriff” Skeete was the leading Barbadian driver in fourth position with Louis Venezia calling the notes in their Suburu Impreza WRC S12B. Their elapsed time was 39 minutes, 8.14 seconds.
Rounding out the top five were Britain’s Rob Swann and Aled Edwards in another Ford Focus. They were in third place at one stage but slipped to fifth after some vehicular issues on the final loop where they lost valuable time.
In addition to Skeete and Venezia, the other top placed Barbados pairings were Roger Mayers and Sean Corbin in sixth position in a Toyota Starlet, with a time of 39 minutes, 44.76 seconds, and Josh Read and Mark Jordan in seventh place, also in a Toyota Starlet, with a time of 39 minutes, 54.16 seconds
Yesterday was quite hot and steamy, with more threats of rain than heavy rainfall itself. But nothing stopped hundreds of local, regional and international rally fans from taking up various vantage points in areas of Luke Hill, Mount Poyer, Fruitful Hill, Welchman Hall, and elsewhere, as the rally roared through.
The rally re-commenced on today’s final day at Carrington, and will take in Drax Hall, Malvern, and Padmore Village.
After a mid-day service and lunch break the rally will return to Drax Hall, Malvern and Padmore Village, before concluding with what is expected to be a thrilling Vaucluse Raceway SuperSpecial stage.
