The Sanitation Service Authority got a passing grade today for its collection of garbage on the routes identified by Minister of the Environment Dr Denis Lowe in an interview with Barbados TODAY.
Thursday, a Barbados TODAY team took up Lowe’s challenge to journalists to move around the country to see the waste had been removed from such districts as Pie Corner and Moon Town in St Lucy, Highway 5 which stretches from the Prime Minister’s official residence in Two Mile Hill to as far east as the parish of St Philip, and the stretch of road from Bridgetown to Speightstown in St Peter.
Barbados TODAY’S team not only visited the districts identified by Lowe, but visited such districts as Sealy Hall and Sargeant Street in St John where all of the residents interviewed gave the SSA a thumbs up.
Holder’s Hill in St James was the only district visited by the Barbados TODAY where unsightly piles of garbage could be seen all along that stretch of road.
In praising the work being done by SSA workers in Sargeant Street, Gloria Wiltshire said: “I have no problem with garbage collection in my district. If they do not come in the mornings, they return in the night. If there is any unsightly piles of garbage along the road it is because some people bring out their garbage immediately after the garbage truck passes.”
Also showering praise on SSA workers was Brian Newton of Sealy Hall, St John, who said: “I have no problem with the work being done by SSA workers in Sealy Hall. They come out regularly to collect the garbage.”
Over at Salters in St George, Laurine Hoyte had high praise for SSA workers saying: “I have no problems with the work being done by SSA workers. At present, there is a small pile of garbage on the opposite side of the road, but this has arisen because residents of Lower Estate dump their garbage there.”
A worker of Jac’s Pizza in Checker Hall, St Lucy, also gave a thumbs up to the quality of work being done by SSA workers pointing out that garbage trucks passed every Tuesday and Thursday to collect garbage.
Over at Babbs in St Lucy, where a small pile of garbage had accumulated at the entrance to the road on which she lives, Jan Jarvis stressed there were regular pickups by SSA workers, and the pile-up was garbage from about five or six households on the road.”
During a drive from Six Roads to the Prime Minister’s official residence, the accuracy of Lowe’s statement yesterday with the absence of any piles of garbage on the stretch of road was borne out.
Lowe told Barbados TODAY that significant progress had been made in garbage collection in such areas as Pie Corner, Moon Town, the stretch of road from Bridgetown to Speightstown, and along Highway 5 –– from Two Mile Hill to St Philip.
Yesterday, in defence of SSA workers, Lowe contended he was still of the view Barbados was cleaner on any given day than most of the other Caribbean islands.
The Christ Church East MP said he was convinced Barbados was cleaner on any given day than New York City, adding he had pictures to show the accuracy of his statement.
Arguing that the Freundel Stuart administration should be commended for its garbage collection when compared with that of New York City, Lowe said : “Some may say I am comparing apples with oranges, but if New York City is a developed and financially fluid city and has access to more resources, it should collect its garbage.”

Castle Terrace, Long Bay, St Philip is a small private community with several restrictions, yet non-residents of the terrace are using an empty lot to dump their rubbish creating a serious health hazard via rats, mosquitoes, etc.
In addition the said lot is being used as a vehicular road for the said non-residents resulting in there being a lot of mud and loud traffic throughout the day and night creating unhappiness in what normally was a quiet residential terrace.
Our road was very bad but we got together and through our minister the honorable Michael Lashley, our road was beautifully done.
The road for these non-residents runs parallel to Castle Terrace from Long Bay Road, but they chose to take the easy way out rather than take action to get their road fixed as we did for castle terrace.
The affected residents of castle terrace are not happy about the total disrespect shown. In addition, there could be difficulties should they attempt to sell and move elsewhere - But why should they ??

The people of Barbados do not have a problem with the workers of the SSA or the job they do, in fact I believe that most people give them high credit for their actions under great & adverse conditions. However the people of Barbados do have a great deal of complaints & issues with yourself who mismanage the SSA to the extent there is a lack of equipment for them to fully do their jobs or vast amounts of taxpayers money is being used to rent equipment rather than fix what is owned by the SSA.
Come up with a comprehensive household recycling & kerbside collection policy, do away with the tipping fee(tax) & the illegal dumping will reduce.
Work with supermarkets to encourage recycling points on their premises so less garbage is thrown out.
The SSA do a great job, what they lack is a management that is comparable to the workforce.

I say a hearty THANK YOU to the Sanitation Service Authority for the job it is currently doing. Those men are out there at 2.:00 and 3:00 a.m. collecting our garbage while we are in our beds sleeping or relaxing. I believe that they are trying their best with the limited resources they have to work with in an effort to keep Barbados clean. Let us stop with our politics and be thankful that we get our rubbish collected free of cost:or we can pay for the service if we are not satisfied with what we are getting at present.
