Barbadian jumper Akela Jones has announced that she intends to double up on events at the upcoming Rio Olympic Games.
Jones, the Kansas State star, has had a strong season in both her chosen events the long jump and heptathlon and will hope to be Barbados’ first medallist in either or both events.
Last month Jones leapt a new personal best of 6.75m, which was also a new Barbados national record.
The athlete, who already meets the qualifying marks for Rio in both events, will attempt to secure her place on the Olympics team at this weekend’s Barbados national trials.
“Those are my best events this year, so it makes sense to contest them and the schedule allows for me to do it. There are two rounds of the high jump, and the heptathlon is the first two days, then you get a few days to rest, and then the prelims of the high jump start before the finals,” the 21-year-old University senior said.
