Sandals supporting sports

Sandals Barbados and the Sandals Foundation will be giving financial support to providing local coverage of the 2016 Rio Olympics and this year’s installment of the Sir Garfield Sobers cricket tournament.

The resort chain has committed over $70,000 dollars to CBC Television’s live coverage of the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil and an equally substantial sum to the cricket tourney.

Michelle Arthur, director of News & Current Affairs of CBC Television accepting sponsorship from general manager of Sandals Barbados Fernand Zievinger.

General manager of Sandals Barbados Fernand Zievinger said the cash sponsorships were paramount to the development of the future of sports in Barbados.

“Sir Garry is one of the few living legends in the world of cricket and we are proud to have him as a Barbadian. So us lending support to him and this tournament, which has contributed considerably to the development of cricket over the years, has not necessitated much consideration. As for the Olympics go, we are well aware of Barbados and the rest of the Caribbean’s continued rise on this world stage and we are proud to stand behind such a commanding broadcast here,” Zievinger said.

Sandals Resorts has also supported substantially the recently concluded Tri-Nation Cricket Series that featured hosts West Indies, Australia and South Africa.

Michelle Arthur, director of News & Current Affairs of CBC Television, lauded the continued support from Sandals Resorts.

In accepting the sponsorship commitment, Arthur said: “Since 2014, Sandals has been there for Barbados whenever major sporting events across the world occur, beginning with their sponsorship of the FIFA World Cup and today with the Rio Olympics and more. The Olympics are the pinnacle of sporting disciplines as the world’s best gather on the same stage to compete. We are pleased to have them work with us to bring this spectacle to Barbados.”

Devon Chase, business development officer at the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc., who are the organizers of the Sir Garry Sobers Cricket Tournament, also welcomed the Sandals backing for 2016.

“For the second year in a row Sandals has come on board with us. This brings considerable value to the event with the sheer weight of the Sandals brand and we are excited about this. It means a lot and shows the resort’s commitment to the development of young people in Barbados. We thank them and look forward to maximizing this partnership,” Chase said.
