Hoopsters hurt Pinelands’ pride

Combined Schools Hoopsters and Challengers Sports Club both registered wins last night in the ongoing Beauty Supplies and Beauty Exchange 2016 Barbados Amateur Basketball Association’s Women’s League.

The biggest upset on the night came when Hoopsters made up of mostly schoolgirls defeated Orange Three Pinelands women 76-69 (20-21, 35-32, 52-51) in one of the hardest fought games for the season played at the Barbados Community College.

Sade Clarke of Orange Three Pinelands scored 16 points in a losing cause.

The Bowen twin, Winmalicia and Winmarie, led the way with scores of 15 and ten respectively, along with 12 from Stephian Shepherd. They got the better of the Pinelands unit made up of star quality players like Tamisha Flatts who top scored with 23 points, 2015 Most Valuable Player Maria ‘Flowers’ Cumberbatch who scored 18 and captain Sade Clarke who chipped in with 16.

It was a very close game with Hoopsters leading by just one point at the end of the penultimate quarter. However Hoopsters upped their defence preventing Pinelands’ point guards Flatts and Cumberbatch from getting the space they relish in the fourth and decisive quarter that allowed them to take a seven-point win.

The other match between Challengers and the University of the West Indies Blackbirds was not so competitive with a rather low scoring result of 37-26 (5-2, 13-11, 24-20) in Challengers’ favour. Tara Dowrich netted 22 points for Challengers. None of the players from UWI got into double figures with Aisha Hinds scoring eight for Blackbirds, who played one of their poorest games for season.

Earlier this week on Tuesday Hoopsters were also victorious after being Challengers 51-32. The quarter scores read 13-10, 25-18 and37-24. UWI suffered their second defeat this week going down to Burger King Clapham Bulls 48-37 (11-10, 27-21, 37-24).
