The Grantley Adams International Airport returned to a state of normality today with the resumption of regularly scheduled flights.
The airport was closed for the entire day on Wednesday due to the passage of Tropical Storm Matthew.
Displaced passengers gathered at the help desks of the various airlines today with hopes of getting their travel plans back on track.
In a brief phone interview with Barbados TODAY, LIAT’s Corporate Commercial Officer Lloyd Caswell expressed confidence that by the end of day, 95 per cent of the affected passengers would get to their respective destinations.
“The weather system was indeed widespread and forced a number of cancellation. As a matter of fact 80 per cent of [our] network was down. However we have brought in a few recovery flights as well as two bigger planes to pick up the slack. We expect that we should have at least 95 cent of the passengers to their various destinations by the end of the day,” Caswell said.
Caribbean Airlines also had a similar plan to cater for its passengers who were stranded as a result of the passing weather system.
However a thick cloud of uneasiness and anxiety hovered over some passengers in the departure area, even though they acknowledge that the backlog was not the fault of the airlines.
One passenger heading to St Vincent, who preferred not to be named, said she was “stranded in Barbados since Tuesday evening” and was longing to get home to her family.
“It’s [the] weather and you can’t do anything about that, but I hope I can get home this evening because I am running low on cash and I am missing my boys,” she said.
“I understand that rain damage a back wall by my house . . and I really need to be home to make sure everyone is safe,” chimed in her friend, who also requested anonymity.
However both said that they had been placed on a LIAT flight scheduled to leave at 1p.m.
