Schools in Dominica will remain closed until Monday as disaster management officials assess the damage caused by Tropical Storm Matthew.
The storm dumped heavy rain on the island yesterday, triggering landslides in the southern communities of Grand Bay and Bellevue, as well as Bath Estate and Copthall on the outskirts of the capital Roseau.
Several areas were reported to be without water and electricity as a result of the passage of the storm.

The tropical storm warning has been discontinued for Dominica, but Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit told local radio station Kairi FM this morning that the public still needs to exercise extreme caution.
“We have to appreciate as a country that we are still suffering the effects of Tropical Storm Erika which left a number of our areas exposed and vulnerable. And therefore we have to exercise extreme caution as we go about our daily activities.
“This is why we have taken the decision to have our students remain home for today and tomorrow to allow for a better assessment of the situation across the country and to ensure that everything is safe for the proper movement of individuals across the country,” Skerrit said.

Private businesses and government offices have reopened today, however the Douglas Charles airport remains closed. Ferry services to neighbouring Martinique, Guadeloupe and St Lucia were cancelled yesterday and are expected to resume tomorrow.
