The teaching profession and the credit union movement have lost one of their most devoted sons.
Former educator, trade unionist, credit unionist, local preacher, choirmaster and organist in the Methodist circuit, John Wilkinson Lovell died last night at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. He was 88.
During his long career in the teaching profession, he taught at Wesley Hall Primary School and the then Technical Institute, now the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic .
He later became principal of the Providence Primary School, Roebuck Primary School and the Christ Church Boys’ School, now the Milton Lynch Primary School.
Lovell was a former President of the Barbados Union of Teachers and a founding member of the Barbados Teachers’ Co-operative Credit Union.
The office of the Barbados Teachers’ Credit Union on Lower Collymore Rock, St Michael is housed in a building which bears his name – The John W Lovell Building.
Lovell, who had been ailing for sometime, is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and five children.
