Sixth Form for Grantley Adams Memorial School

The Grantley Adams Memorial School has been added to the list of schools to have sixth forms next year.
Minister of Education Ronald Jones made the announcement yesterday as he addressed the unveiling ceremony for a new Cosmetology Laboratory at the school in St Joseph, saying “I will add you to that list”.
Jones stated that while there was a need to have a variety of post-secondary options for young students, revenue challenges were the main hindrance to the implementation of such a venture.

He urged the school to move forward with the necessary research and proposals, however he cautioned that there were some considerations to be made when taking such a huge step.
“”It is not simple, but it is doable…  There is no guarantee… it’s an involved process,” he said, noting that the school needed to be “in a position of readiness”.
Jones also praised the notion that the school’s proposed sixth form would focus on technical and vocational studies.
The Cosmetology Laboratory was made possible through a partnership with El Dorado Gold (Barbados) Ltd.

  • We do not just need sixth forms, but a curriculum relevant to a developing nation.
Instead of every secondary school having a sixth form - those without will be seen as inferior - we need four sixth form colleges geographically located with A class curricula, focusing on STEM and languages.
But emphasis must be on the nursery to aged 16 yr olds, with a system of fat-tracking those youngsters who show a high ability at certain subjects ie maths.
By the way, what percentage of GDP is spent on education.
