SPORTS – Leacock chases golf title

Veteran Barbados player Carlsen Leacock is going on the hunt for the title tomorrow when the final 18 holes of the 2016 RBC Classic are contested at the Barbados Golf Club.
Leacock, 58, registered an impressive even-par 72 today to lead the men’s championship flight and stave off his younger rivals on a sunny day at the Durants, Christ Church course.
Playing in a four-ball group that included rising teenager Iz Hustler, Canada-based Stephen Layne and fellow Barbados player Maurice Forde, the 2015 Barbados Open champion recorded four birdies while producing some steady play on the first day.
“I’m hoping for some good weather again tomorrow and I will be seeking to win the tournament,” said Leacock.

Young Barbados player Hustler (gross 75), former Jamaica player Mark Blakeley (75) and Stephen Layne (76) were chasing the leader while most other contenders appeared to be struggling over the first 18 holes.
Barbados junior player Oaziah Layne was leading the men’s first flight division, (7-14 handicaps) with a competitive 76, and was  three strokes ahead of second-placed Peter Morgan ( 79) while Argyle Maynard was third on 82.
Among the women, long-serving Barbados player Lynn deCambra-Mcleod took an early lead yesterday with a gross 84, which was three strokes better than young Barbados player Alyssa Inniss-Gittens (87) and the experienced Julia Stephenson. Emily Odwin was fourth with a gross 91.
Zerina Belgrave recorded 40 points to lead the women’s stableford competition while national junior player Eryn Blakeley was second with 38 points.
The Senior men’s division, featuring players over 50 years, appeared well poised for an interesting finish with the consistent Orville Alleyne (gross 74) leading Michael Haynes (75) by a stroke and three strokes ahead of London-based Richard Payne (77).
Veteran coach Denis Foster seemed well-placed to make a run for the title in the Super-Seniors division (over 60 years) as he shot 76 and was leading rivals Tyrone Mapp (80),John Phillips (84) and Neville Brewster (84) going into the final day.
In the men’s open stableford division , Clennel Goodman was the clear leader with 42 points and was being chased by Alwin Browne (39), Wayne Boucher (38) and Peter Howard on 36 points.
The RBC Classic, which concludes tomorrow and has attracted 116 players, is organised by the Barbados Golf Association and is being sponsored by Royal Bank for the 12th straight year. (BB)
